Surviving Your First Week at a Startup – A Guide for the Brave
CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve landed yourself a role at a startup. Startups have a reputation for having fast-paced environments, innovative culture and, yes, a little bit of chaos, but what’s the fun without it. Your first week can definitely be intimidating – adjusting to a small team, new faces, countless tasks and lots of learning. To help with this new step in your career journey, here’s a guide to help you brave the first week with confidence!
1. Embrace the Chaos
Startups thrive on flexibility and rapid change. Embracing the chaos can feel a bit like riding a rollercoaster. The trick is to not fight the twists and turns, but instead keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to adapt. One day you might be working on one project and then next it’s been completely scrapped. Show your team that you can throw your hands up, scream a little and enjoy the unexpected ride! If it feels a little crazy, you’re probably doing it right!
2. Take initiative
Unlike more structured corporate environments, startups value proactive thinkers. Rather than waiting for tasks to be assigned, take the initiative. If you see something that needs doing, step up and take the lead! Offer up new ideas, provide fresh insights or even lend a helping hand. The whole team would be super grateful!
3. Build relationships
Startups are typically small, close-knit teams – which can be a great advantage! Get to know your coworkers, what is their role, how you can support each other, which pub is the best for Friday after work drinks. Building these relationships early will help you feel comfortable and confident, especially during hectic times.
4. Get Comfortable with Juggling
Your job description may say one thing, but in a startup, roles are often fluid. Being part of a small team means you might find yourself juggling more than one role. This is your chance to learn new skills and expand your horizons – embrace it!
5. Stay Curious
Your first week is the perfect time to get familiar with the company. Be proactive! Ask questions, join meetings, and try to learn as much as you can. Showing your eagerness for the team and their project will demonstrate your commitment and help build team rapport.
While your first week at a startup might feel daunting, remember, everyone on the team has been in the same shoes as you at some point. It’s never bad to ask questions if you’re confused – take it day by day and stay resilient. You’ve got this!
